SPOTLIGHT ON THE GAMECHANGER CHALLENGES
GAMECHANGER’S INNOVATIVE GAMECHANGER CHALLENGES ARE INTEGRAL TO OUR IMPACT AND INTERVENTION PROGRAMMES. AS PART OF OUR BLENDED LEARNING APPROACH, THEY FACILITATE LEARNING AND BEHAVIOUR CHANGE THROUGH PHYSICAL, GROUP CHALLENGES. READ ON FOR MORE ON OUR DEVELOPMENT PROCESS AND THE BENEFITS TO USING A GAMECHANGER CHALLENGE KIT IN YOUR SCHOOL OR YOUTH ORGANISATION.
Gamechanger Challenge Kits were developed through Gamechanger’s early collaboration with Challenge Academy CIC. The kit we use today has been continually evaluated and improved so the resource is now at the peak of behaviour change provision. Each kit is a complete group learning resource, filled with information, activities, ideas and equipment focused on personal and professional growth and collaborative discovery. It includes the equipment and instructions required for warm-ups, team challenges, reviews, session planning, and ‘mental toughness’ exercises.
The Gamechanger Challenges are an essential part of our methodology and pedagogy at Gamechanger. This active, group learning – focused on problem-solving, cohesion and self-reflection – empowers participants to be resilient in the face of a challenge, and to make strong choices concerning difficult social issues, such as potential involvement in CCE or knife crime. Activity embraces, promotes and develops the 4 ‘C’s of mental toughness: Confidence, Challenge, Commitment and control.
It is this mental toughness that facilitates the behaviour change which we aim to achieve through multiple Gamechanger Challenge sessions. In fact, the impact is proven, and our feedback from recent sessions showed that 89% of participants felt the Gamechanger Challenges helped them understand the need for trust and communication in developing strong and resilient friendship groups. By framing Gamechanger’s gritty and hard-hitting theatre and film within a wider, workshop context, and including a focus on behaviour change, we have found the impact on young people to be empowering and long-lasting.
As well as the physical resources, the kit includes a comprehensive operations manual, packed full of instructions, activities, ideas, safety information and facilitation knowledge. We have also included tips on feedback and planning to help you get the most from the resource.
Gamechanger Challenge Kits have a broad reach: they are suitable for all ages from 7+ and each kit/session can run for up to 80 people at a time. In fine weather, the challenges work especially well outside, and nothing beyond the kit itself is required for delivery success. Every part of the kit is designed for purpose and manufactured to be robust, waterproof and pupil-proof! The kit bags are ethically produced, using acceptable standards of labour and human rights practices. The bags and kits are durable and long-lasting, ensuring you will have a timeless resource for many years. For maximum ease of use, all components fit neatly into the kit bag, which is straightforward to carry and store.
To deliver sessions using the Gamechanger Challenge Kit, our training course, ‘Facilitation Skills for Experiential Learning’, is required. It focuses on how to pitch and shape the learning process to reach the learning objective. Just like the kit itself, this course is practical, engaging, thorough and fun, and is accredited by the Council for Learning Outside the Classroom (CLOtC) and the Institute for Outdoor Learning (IOL). Trainees are assessed throughout the process and are certified to facilitate activities using their Gamechanger Challenge Kit.
What do teachers and youth workers say about Gamechanger Challenge Kits?
“The practical activities helped the students to realise how their actions can impact both positively and negatively on both themselves and their peers.”
“I can think at least of a handful of young people I work with where emotional resilience and trust is very low. Every one of the activities was inclusive and team orientated with no one being excluded.”
“I have gained some fantastic knowledge today and I look forward to organising sessions for young people.”
“This gives them more confidence in their own abilities and decision-making and helps them find their own voices and opinions rather than being led solely by others. They may not have learned these life skills in their home environment.”
“The challenges give positive impact by turning a ‘can’t do’ approach into a ‘can do’ approach. They give everyone the opportunity to feel their contribution is valued.”
Prices start at £1,850 per kit, including training for up to 6 youth leaders or teachers. Once purchased, the Gamechanger Challenge Kit belongs to you and can be adapted to develop and enhance any aspects of your curriculum that lie outside of traditional classroom teaching. It will help you deliver new skills training to groups of young people and colleagues for many years to come.
